Microsoft Licenses iOS Design Patents, Agrees to an “Anti-Cloning” Stipulation

According to Boris Teksler, director of Patent Licensing & Strategy at Apple, Microsoft has taken a license from Apple on iOS’ design patents. These design patents are the exact same ones that Apple is currently using against Samsung in the Apple vs. Samsung legal trials.

The agreement includes an “anti-cloning” stipulation, according to Dane Levine, a legal reporter for Reuters currently covering the Samsung-Apple case, which prevents Microsoft from completely cloning an Apple product.

This information was revealed today in court, likely as a way of showing the jury that even a company like Microsoft believes that Apple’s patents are valid enough to license, and that Samsung is the exception to the rule.
