iOS and Android Represent 85 Percent of Smartphones Shipped in Second Quarter

According to new figures published by research firm IDC, the two horse race between iPhone and Android smartphones continues with iOS and Android together accounting for 85 percent of all smartphones shipped in the second quarter of 2012.

The numbers show that Google’s Android platform represented 68.1 percent of all smartphones sold during the quarter, while iOS held only a 16.9 percent stake as most consumers opt to hold off for the next-generation iPhone.

BlackBerry and Symbian continued to decline, accounting for less than 10 percent of the market share combined, while Windows Phone showed promising growth that should continue with the release of Windows Phone 8 later this year.
