Corrupt Apps Being Propagated through App Stores

Last night, within minutes of Apple approving the Instapaper 4.2.3 update, I was deluged by support email and Twitter messages from customers saying that it crashed immediately on launch, even with a clean install.

And this is happening to other apps, not just Instapaper, updated in the last few days.

Arment, creator of Instapaper, goes on to list various apps that are also having issues. The corruption seems to be occurring only in specific regions of the world (the U.S. and the U.K. included), which points to an issue in Apple’s CDN.

Apple has not publicly acknowledged the problem, and the issues have persisted through yesterday and are, as of this writing, ongoing. Arment’s list includes very popular titles, such as Angry Birds Space HD Free, Instapaper, GoodReader, and Flick Soccer. Try to avoid updating any apps until the problems have been sorted out, as it is impossible to tell what the result will be. There is also no official way to revert the updated app.

Apple’s Mac App Store also seems to be experiencing this same issue, so be careful with those app updates and downloads as well.
