Apple CEO Tim Cook, speaking with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the AllThingsD D10 conference, talked about how the Ping social networking service integrated into iTunes has been a rare bust for the company. In fact, Cook was trying to avoid talking about that matter.
What about Ping? Will Apple do more social or was that the last of it?
“Apple doesn’t have to own a social network, but does Apple have to be social? Yes,” said Tim Cook. “You’ll see us integrate Twitter into the Mac OS as we introduce Mountain Lion. Game Center and iMessage could be thought of as social.”
What happened to Ping?
“I was carefully avoiding that,” Cook remarked. “We tried Ping and I think the customer voted and said this isn’t something that I want to put a lot of energy into. Will we kill it? I don’t know. We’ll look at that.”
