Apple Wants to Seize Control of ‘iPhone5.com’

For the past few years, numerous Apple and technology-related publications, including iFans, have made usage of the “iPhone 5″ moniker to describe the next-generation iPhone.

Even after the release of the iPhone 4S, the rumor mill still uses the iPhone 5 name, despite the fact that the next iPhone released by Apple will actually be the sixth-generation model.

In what perhaps is an indicator of the name of the next iPhone, Apple has filed a claim with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in hopes of seizing control of the “iPhone5.com” domain. Apple has been successful in acquiring domain names related to its products in the past, including iPhone4.com and iPhone4S.com, but is usually slower at the process and waits until after the release of the products until filing a claim.
