When you first start the game, you have a choice of ten different topics, from Top Stories to Business and Health. There is both Classic Mode and Timed Mode, with four different difficulty settings. The soundtrack is the usual cheerful elevator music that’s undistracting and appropriate for this type of game. Although, there are occasionally morbid titles that may seem out of place in the upbeat game.
Game play in easy mode is slow paced, and most of the letters are already filled in. At the bottom of the screen is a synopsis of the news article to give you hints with revealing words starred out. The synopsis isn’t really needed in easy mode, but in the more difficult settings, it is crucial. Expert mode is extremely hard, and doesn’t have any pre-filled letters, only a “V” if it is a vowel. The letters are mixed from multiple words at once, so it requires more thought than simply solving an anagram. This will provide a challenge to even the most weathered Word Smiths.
In timed mode you race against the clock, with each correct letter tile earning you additional time, and each mistake giving you a penalty. There is a multiplier bar that goes up as you get letters correct. If you win, you move on to the next level. Classic mode is more relaxing, and you are only penalized for incorrect placements. You have to get a certain percentage correct to beat the level, and you have a freebie tile in case you get stuck.
The game saves previously played articles so you can re-read them, and caches new articles so the game can be played offline. It integrates with OpenFeint, so you can compare high scores and challenge friends.
