We have been routinely updating you on the status of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1, and we now have great news about some progress that has been made. In a tweet from earlier today, infamous iOS hacker pod2g said, “Heya! My iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 is now untethered.”
While this does prove that jailbreak developers are working on an exploit for iOS 5.1, this exact method has not been released to the public yet. There is no guarantee that the jailbreak will ever be released at all, since pod2g posted a poll on his blog last week that asked users if he should hold off on releasing this jailbreak until iOS 6.
The best thing to do is to exercise your patience, and provide support to the developers that are investing a great deal of effort into working on these jailbreaks. Nobody should ever get angry or impatient with jailbreak developers, since they have normal day-to-day responsibilities to look after and release these jailbreaks for free as a hobby.
While iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and new iPad owners will have to keep waiting, older device users have a slight advantage. That’s because older A4-powered devices, such as the iPhone 4 and latest iPod touch, already have the luxury of a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1 courtesy of redsn0w.
