Update: Unfortunately, many of our forum members are reporting that AT&T is unable to complete their unlock requests. The reps are recommending that users call AT&T or go into a store instead.
It had been rumored Friday that AT&T would allow out-of-contract iPhones on their network to be unlocked today, April 8th. Now, according to iPhone jailbreak developer Grant Paul (chpwn to those of you familiar with the scene), they have begun doing so through their online chat system. Keep reading to find out how you can unlock your old iPhone.
All you have to do is initiate a chat session with one of AT&T’s reps online and then give him your IMEI, which can be found in Settings > General > About. When you’ve done this, Apple will email you an unlock code within 72 hours and all you need to do next for the unlock to complete is restore your device. If you need help with this, AT&T reps have been referring to this support document on Apple’s website.
Please note that your unlock code could take much longer than 72 hours and some reports from users claim that AT&T told them it would take a week even. If this happens to you, don’t panic and just wait until the date that they say things will be finished.
Alternatively, if you wish to have an AT&T representative unlock the phone for you in person, then this will be available at your local AT&T store. However, do understand that you’ll still have to wait for the unlock code from Apple to complete the process.
