Rumor: 5-Inch Retina Display Device to Launch in 2013

The latest rumor from the hit-and-miss Japanese blog Macotakara claims that Apple will be launching a brand new 5-inch device with a Retina display next year. The resolution of the display is expected to be 1600 x 960 or 1280 x 960 pixels, which would add yet another screen size that App Store developers would have to work with…

Fortunately, apps designed for the iPhone and iPod touch — which both have a 3.5-inch screen — could be ported to the larger screen rather easily. The last we heard about a smaller device was rumblings about a seven- to eight-inch “iPad mini” in time for the holidays, while the Wall Street Journal has also suggested that Apple is working on an 8-inch iPad to better compete with Amazon’s low-priced Kindle Fire tablet. And a 5-inch device isn’t too much bigger than the rumored 4.6-inch iPhone.
