According to The Inquirer, Intel’s new Sandy Bridge E server chips will be ready to launch within the next week. These new processors are a perfect match for the Mac Pro, which has gone over a year an a half without an upgrade. Intel has already begun distributing the CPUs to vendors—Apple possibly included—so we could see a Mac Pro refresh as early as this month.
There have been rumors that Apple is planning to drop support for the high-end workstation, as they did with the Xserve, in order to focus on mass market devices like the MacBook and iMac. But, power users who need a dual-octacore Mac have limited options other than creating a hackintosh.
