iPad 3 Rear Shell is 0.8 mm Thicker than iPad 2

Apple.pro today pointed to a photo of what is claimed to be an iPad 3 rear chassis being measured with a digital caliper compared to an iPad 2 being measured with the same tool. The photo, which can be seen above, suggests that Apple’s next-generation tablet may be slightly thicker than its predecessor, measuring at 95.0 mm in thickness. Apple’s iPad 2, on the other hand, is only 86.9 mm in thickness, which means that the iPad 3 may be moderately thicker. Read on for additional details.

Apple recently announced that they would be holding an iPad event on Wednesday, March 7th at 10:00 AM PT. The iPad 3 has been rumored to include a Retina display and larger battery, which would account for the slight addition in thickness. In addition to this, the device has been rumored to tout LTE capability and the radios for this require a little more space than 3G radios.
