Messages Beta on Lion Has an Expiration Date

A word of warning for users getting attached to Apple’s new Messages app: the beta, which is available to all users running Lion 10.7.3, will cease functioning once OS X Mountain Lion is released this Summer, and those who wish to continue using the app will need to purchase 10.8. The OS upgrade will probably be painless (and relatively cheap), but if your machine doesn’t make the cut, you’ll be left in the cold. Supporting legacy hardware is not high on Apple’s todo list, and while many customers will be angry to find that their 2008 MacBook is now “obsolete”, it does allow Apple to innovate with new features.
