iOS Developer Ryan Petrich Releases ContactPrivacy

Prominent iOS developer Ryan Petrich has released ContactPrivacy, a free jailbreak tweak available in Cydia that notifies you when an application tries to obtain your device’s contact data. Petrich, best known for his Activator tweak, released this latest tweak in response to the controversy surrounding the photo sharing app ‘Path’ on the App Store. Just recently, it was revealed that the app uploaded contact information from an iOS device to its servers without informing the user it was doing so. But, Petrich has created a viable solution to this problem…

With ContactPrivacy, however, your iOS device will alert you when an application is trying to use your contacts data and give you the opportunity to deny that action from taking place. Petrich notes that revoking the ability for apps to collect contact data can cause problems with certain apps, however, meaning that using the tweak might render some apps dysfunctional. Nonetheless, ContactPrivacy is a useful new tweak that can be downloaded from Ryan Petrich’s official Cydia repository, http://rpetri.ch/repo.
