Inside iOS: How to Enable the Emoji Keyboard

Inside iOS is a new weekly installment each Thursday that provides tips, explanations, and other valuable information about using iOS for both beginners and advanced users. Feel free to visit our Inside iOS hub for previous tips.

With the addition of iMessage in iOS 5, communicating between the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad has never been easier. One of the main advantages of messaging another iOS device from your own is that you can make use of “emoji,” better known as emoticons. Emoji icons are not included in the standard English keyboard, however, so you have to enable a seperate keyboard in iOS altogether to access them. Here is how…

To do so, navigate to Settings on your iOS device and tap General. Next, tap the Keyboard menu followed by International Keyboards. Tap on Add New Keyboard… and then scroll down until you find the Emoji option. When enabled, the Emoji keyboard will show up under the international keyboard globe icon on the default keyboard. Tapping this globe icon will reveal an entire collection of emoji icons that you can include in your messages.
