In addition to the over 350 retail stores it operates independently, Apple will begin expanding into smaller markets by launching “store-within-a-store” outlets at select Target locations in the United States. According to AppleInsider, the Cupertino-based company will launch designated retail areas at 25 of Target’s 1,752 locations nationwide. The second largest discount retailer, next to Walmart, will become Apple’s first new retail partner since it teamed up with Best Buy in the early 2000s.
Apple has had similar retail partnerships in the past with Sears, Office Max, and the now defunct chains of Circuit City, Computer City, and CompUSA. Target is already an authorized Apple reseller and many of its locations carry a lineup of iPods, iPhones, and iPads. While Target will be expanding into Canada in 2013, it remains unknown if Apple will choose to launch its “mini-store” outlets north of the American border.
