iOS 5.1 Beta Contains References to Quad-Core Processors

9to5Mac has discovered references to quad-core processors in the latest iOS 5.1 beta. Strings in the code list support for four cores—”core.0” to “core.3“, and while the current A5 chips found in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are dual-core, but the next generation of smartphones are expected to double the number of cores to four. This does not mean that the A6 chip will be quad-core, but it does mean that Apple is considering it. There are a handful of quad-core Android devices on the market, including the Tegra 3 powered Transformer Prime tablet, and the next generation of Android smartphones will likely receive a similar upgrade.
