New Apple Patents Hint at Thunderbolt on iOS Devices

Apple has filed three new patents with the United States Patent & Trademark Office related to high-speed Thunderbolt I/O. This blazing fast technology, that Intel is bringing to PCs, is currently deployed on all current-generation Macs. The exciting news surrounding these patents is that, as discovered by Patently Apple, one of the filings suggests that Apple could be bringing Intel’s Thunderbolt technology to iOS devices in the future…

In Apple’s secondary patent application, the Cupertino-based company states that “a connection may be provided between a portable media player and a display, a computer and a portable media player, or between other types of devices.” While it is not directly expressed, it is reasonable to suggest that Apple is referring to the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

If future iOS devices were Thunderbolt-equipped, it would allow for virtually instantaneous syncing with iTunes and much speedier charging. A previous rumor has already suggested that Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone will have Thunderbolt technology and a new charging method.
