According to Reuters, the A5 chip that powers both the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is now manufactured stateside in an Austin, Texas plant owned by Samsung Electronics. The chip is being produced at Samsung’s $3.6 billion non-memory chip production line, which reached its full output in early December.
Most of the output from the new production line is dedicated entirely to Apple’s A5 logic chip. Many other of Apple’s component suppliers are based overseas, several thousand miles away from the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. Both Apple and Samsung refused to comment on the matter.
