Several months ago, Hewlett-Packard announced that it would be ceasing development of all webOS-based devices after the company’s unsuccessful launch of the TouchPad tablet. It was unknown what approach Hewlett-Packard would take with webOS itself, but the ill-fated platform appears to be a part of the company’s roadmap moving forward.
Yesterday, Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman announced that most aspects of the operating system would become open source. Better yet, Whitman has now announced that the company could begin making webOS-powered tablets in 2013. In 2012, though, the company will focus on manufacturing Windows 8-based tablets instead. Let’s hope, in two years time, that webOS-based tablets will fare better than the TouchPad did.
