Google has just announced Currents, a new Flipboard-esque news reader for iOS and Android. Currents is able to present news stories from over 180 leading publications in a beautiful interface, and offers offline support reading in a dead zone. The app can also import RSS, video, and picture feeds, and well as Google+ streams. The discovery feature allows users to find new trending stories as they unfold, and stories can be shared with others using the Google Plus integration.
Reading articles is somewhat tedious due to the magazine-like interface, which breaks stories into short pages (a lot of swiping is involved). We hope Google doesn’t phase out the more powerful Reader service, but Currents is a good first attempt at creating a competitor to Apple’s newsstand.
