Motorola Could Owe Apple $16 Billion Over Patent Disputes

Motorola is currently involved in a patent dispute with Apple worldwide, claiming that iCloud infringes upon preexisting synchronization technologies. If a preliminary injunction is issued in Motorola’s favor, it could result in a complete or partial shutdown of iCloud services in Germany and several other countries.

The good news for Apple, however, is that Motorola could be forced to pay up to $16 billion in compensation if the Cupertino-based company eventually wins an appeal to have the injunction turned over. The $16 billion figure stems from Apple’s estimates of $2.7 billion in annual losses over a span of eight years, which means that this case could run until 2019.
