Due to the floods in Thailand earlier this Fall, prices for platter-based storage have skyrocketed. Hard drives have more than tripled in price, and vendors are raising prices of pre-built PCs and lowering their storage capacities. Apple is not immune to the problem either: if you custom build an iMac with a 2TB drive, the shipping estimate jumps to 5-7 weeks. Smaller drives seem to be in stock, so it’s possible that 2TB drives are seeing more demand industry-wide, but if your looking to build a new computer (or home media server) it’s probably best to wait until the prices return to normal—unless you want to pay a hefty premium. Interestingly, the shipping times of Mac Pros are not affected.
