Apple Stopped Supporting Carrier IQ with iOS 5

In a statement that Apple issued to AllThingsD, the company said that they stopped supporting the Carrier IQ with iOS 5. In addition, they plan to remove the tracking software with a future update to their mobile OS.

We stopped supporting Carrier IQ with iOS 5 in most of our products and will remove it completely in a future software update. With any diagnostic data sent to Apple, customers must actively opt-in to share this information, and if they do, the data is sent in an anonymous and encrypted form and does not include any personal information. We never recorded keystrokes, messages or any other personal information for diagnostic data and have no plans to ever do so.

It seems that Apple is quite concerned with your privacy, which is a good thing to see. However, even in the light of this, you’re probably concerned that Carrier IQ may still be tracking you. To ensure that your privacy is protected, disable “Diagnostics and Usage” in the Settings app. You can re-enable this once a software update that removes Carrier IQ is released.
