‘iPhone’ is Yahoo’s Number One Searched Term in 2011

For the first time in nine years, a portable electronic has topped Yahoo’s list of top searched terms on their online search engine. According to Yahoo, ‘iPhone’ was their number one searched term in 2011, the first gadget to top the Sunnyvale-based company’s search lists since the PlayStation 2 took the number one spot in 2002.

Apple’s iPhone outpaced celebrities Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, and Jennifer Lopez, who each placed in the top five in searches. Contributing factors to the high search rank for ‘iPhone’ can be associated with the passing of Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs in early October, as well as a flurry of rumors surrounding Apple’s next iPhone, which turned out to be the iPhone 4S with Siri. Yahoo bases its list on billions of Internet searches that it receives per year.

“This is the first time since 2002 that we have had a gadget at No. 1, which is an iPhone.” Vera Chan, a Web trend analyst at Yahoo, said in a conference call announcing the results of the review now in its 10th year. “Even though the product has been around for four years it just became such a major news story,” she added.
