Big Fish Promptly Reeled Out of App Store

Big Fish’s subscription gaming app only lasted a day in the App Store before being tossed back out to sea. The service allowed users to stream as many games as they wanted from within the app for a monthly fee—a business model that Apple generally does not allow for games. The approval of Big Fish’s app led many to believe that Apple was planning to introduce subscription-based games on the App Store, similar to eMagazines like WIRED. The founder of Big Fish told Bloomberg that he had been working closely with Apple in order to make sure his app met the requirements, so the sudden removal is unexpected. The approval could have been a mistake by a novice approver, or perhaps Apple just had a sudden change of heart. Either way, it’s unlikely that we’ll see any more subscription games in the App Store unless Apple makes it official.
