Doom 3 Source Code Released

John Carmack, game programming savant and founder of id Software, has released the source code for one of the most iconic first person shooters ever created: Doom 3. There was a slight delay with this release due to pesky legal issues (which Carmack cleverly coded around), but now, anyone is free to download. The source does not include any game data, which is covered by the EULA, but if you’re interested in digging around the codebase as a learning experiencing, hit the source. The game can be compiled on Windows, OS X, and Linux, but if you would rather dissect one of id’s iOS games, the source for Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM were also recently made available.
