iPad 3 Codename Found in iOS 5 Code

9to5Mac has found strings hidden in iOS 5 that confirm DigiTime’s report of a next-generation iPad. Codenamed the J2, the device is rumored to feature an even higher resolution screen—which could mean a ultra-dense 2048 by 1536 pixel Retina display, and dual LED light bars. The sources believe that the upcoming iPad will be, in essence, an upgraded iPad 2, but it’s unknown if Apple will choose to adopt the “-S” naming convention for their tablet lineup. Of course, even a rough release date is a mystery, but suppliers are expected to ramp up to mass production soon.

The sources pointed out that the J2 project seems to be an upgrade version of the J1 and although Apple has not yet decided which project will be used for the final launch, Apple is likely to make the final decision based on its needs. As for the upstream side, the component suppliers have already conducted pilot production and prepared for mass production.
