British Apple Employee Fired Due to Facebook Comments

A retail employee for Apple in the United Kingdom has been recently fired for “gross misconduct” after posting negative comments about the Cupertino-based company on his Facebook page. The employee, who goes by the name “Crisp,” appealed his firing to the United Kingdom’s labor agency, but Apple’s decision to fire the individual was upheld.

The agency noted that “Apple made it absolutely plain throughout the induction process that commentary on Apple products, or critical remarks about the brand, were strictly prohibited.” The tribunal added that Crisp’s comments “would be particularly damaging for Apple as image is so central to its success,” and therefore, “it was justified and proportionate to limit this right [to post such comments on Facebook] in order to protect its commercial reputation against potentially damaging posts.”
