Any developer who uses OS X is probably familiar with TextMate, the “missing editor” for Macs. Despite being largely unmaintained since the Tiger days, the creators have promised an alpha build of the next major version before the end of the year. For those who don’t know, editors like TextMate are used to work with program source code, and provide a powerful but lightweight environment to work in. Alternatives such as Kod and Sublime Text exist, but none have been able to recreate the magic that is TextMate.
There has been a lot of speculation and trepidation about the future of TextMate recently, mostly about whether there will be another major release. Work on 2.0 began and while we wish it could have been completed faster we are very pleased with how it is turning out. Development has reached a point finally where we can make an announcement:
There will be a public alpha release this year, before Christmas, for registered users.
