LaCie Releases “Little Big Disk” Thunderbolt-Capable External Drive

LaCie has released an external hard drive targeted at Apple users that supports the extremely quick Thunderbolt interconnect found on most new Mac hardware. The drive costs a hefty $399 for ‘just’ one terabyte, but houses a set of 7200 rpm drives paired in RAID0 for maximum performance. The unit is rated for 251 MB/s read speeds, which is around four times faster than USB 2.0—but not nearly as fast as Thunderbolt’s promised 10Gbps. A two terabyte version is available for $500.

The LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt Series heralds a new era for storage performance. Featuring a preconfigured RAID0 striped set with 7200rpm hard drives through the 10 Gbit/s Thunderbolt interface, it delivers astonishing transfer rates of up to 251 MB/s. Now you can truly get the power of rackmount storage—in a portable solution.
