Google Stocking Up On Patents as Mobile OS Wars Rage On

Google recently purchased 1,023 patents from IBM in effort to build up a legal defense for Android. There are a massive amount of lawsuits criss-crossing Silicon Valley, and Android is a major target for competitors. Many argue that the software patent system is seriously flawed, since it allows seemingly trivial ideas like multitouch gestures to be owned by a single entity. After the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, Google even gave HTC a handful of patents to use in an ongoing lawsuit against Apple. With all sides bunkering down and stockpiling ammunition, there is no end in sight. We’ll have to hope that no cool gadgets are harmed in the process.
