Strings found in Lion’s iChat framework suggest that Apple is planning to integrate iMessage into their native instant messaging application. iMessage is Apple’s stab at creating a BlackBerry Messenger like service, and it has many benefits over standard SMS, including typing notifications, additional media support, and read receipts. At the moment, only iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users can chat with each other with iMessage, so bringing the service to the desktop may help it grow—and eliminate the need for expensive texting plans.
The framework has two lines that point toward iMessage integration: “time delivered” and “time read”. Both are unique to the iMessage service, and are not found in standard iChat protocols.
