NBC has reconsidered their mobile video offering by allowing users to view full length episodes of popular TV shows like The Office. Content available on the iPad app now mirrors that which is available online for streaming, and new episodes are generally available the day after they originally air. Hulu and Netflix are both breathing down the neck of cable networks, and the added pressure to push content over the internet is a boon to mobile users. ABC and CBS also offer similar services, and more networks are likely to follow suit to keep subscribers happy.
Vivi Zigler, president, NBCUniversal Digital Entertainment, noted in an interview that the delay was not a technical issue but had to do with wanting to make sure the app “provided a good experience to the consumer and that we understood the business model. The portal [NBC.com] app has been performing well. The bugs are worked out and we felt like it was the right time to make them available in advance of the start of the fall season.”
