“Near-Final” Build of iOS Seeded to Carriers for Testing

Apple has reportedly given carriers a “near final build” of iOS 5 for support training purposes, signaling an imminent public release of the next major update to the mobile operating system. Notable features being tested in this build include FaceTime over 3G, which has eluded non-jailbroken users, as well as Nuance Dictation speech to text, which is expected to be deeply integrated in the OS.

Apple has historically announced new iPods and updates to iOS in early September, but Cupertino seems to be a bit off-schedule this year. A Fall release is guaranteed, but since Apple probably wants to synchronize the launch of new software and hardware, it’s very likely that the iPhone 5 is holding up the release.
