DigiTimes, which has a close relationship with Apple’s supply chain, estimates that iPhone shipments will grow 82% from last year to 86.3 million total units for 2011—pulling ahead of Nokia as the leading smartphone vendor by units shipped. Thanks the the Galaxy line of products, Samsung is expected to grow 191% over last year, putting them right below the steadily-slipping Nokia.
The iPhone 5—and possibly the iPhone “4S” are sure to boost Apple’s sales during the end of 2011, and if Apple, Samsung, and HTC’s growth continues, companies like Nokia could soon be a faint memory.
Apple’s smartphone shipments are projected to top 86.4 million units in 2011, up 82% from 47.5 million units in 2010. In contrast, Nokia’s smartphone shipments in 2011 will decline to 74.4 million units from over 100 million in 2010, said Luke Lin, analyst for Digitimes Research.
