MG Siegler over at TechCrunch has gotten a behind-the-scenes look at Amazon’s upcoming Android tablet. The device, which has already been dubbed “an iPad killer“, seems to be a full color variant of the Kindle rather than an entirely separate product—though Amazon plans to release a 10″ version if the tablet is a success.
Amazon has created a heavily modified (and very orange) version of Android to power the device, so it will be extremely similar to the Barnes and Noble Nook Color. Amazon has chosen to limit the internal storage of the device to just 6 GB, so it’s clear that they will be pushing their offering of cloud services to users. To sweeten the deal, Amazon plans to give customers a free subscription to Prime, a premium service which includes access to thousands of movies and TV shows, as well as free 2-day shipping on most products.
If anyone can loosen Apple’s iron grip on the tablet market, it’s Amazon. And at only $250, the device is sure to sell like there is a fire sale.
