US Government Moves to Block AT&T/T-Mobile Merger

The US government is attempting to block AT&T from acquiring T-Mobile for $39 billion due to antitrust concerns. According to the complaint, the merger would “substantially lessen competition” between carriers, and could ultimately hurt subscribers by raising prices. Since AT&T would be liable to pay T-Mobile $3 billion in cancellation fees (plus $4 billion more in spectrum usage) if the merger falls through, AT&T will fight to keep the deal intact. The FCC is still reviewing the merger, and is expected to reach a decision within a year.
