Apple Files For Figurative Smart Cover Trademark in China

Apple has already trademarked the actual “smart cover” product name in the United States, Canada, Europe, and China. This specific trademark isn’t always effective, however, as it essentially lets someone get away with creating a knock-off cover with a similar name such as this “smart case” which was later pulled from sale. For third-party manufacturers in China, though, things are about to change.

As discovered by Patently Apple, Apple has filed for a figurative smart cover trademark in China’s Patent & Trademark Office which will effectively prohibit the sale of cases, covers, sleeves, pouches, or any similar looking product to that of Apple’s official smart cover—including similarly named products. This won’t stop counterfeit smart covers from being manufactured altogether, but it should help combat the number of fakes produced.
