Netflix has modified their pricing structure to separate the unlimited DVD and streaming plans, in order to “better reflect the costs of each“. Don’t fret, Apple TV users, a $7.99 unlimited streaming plan is still available for your digital viewing pleasure, but if you want to receive unlimited DVDs as well, you’ll have to barf up an additional $7.99 per month (a grand total of $15.98). This differs from the previous option, which allowed users to pay just $2 extra for unlimited DVDs.
Last November when we launched our $7.99 unlimited streaming plan, DVDs by mail was treated as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan. At the time, we didn’t anticipate offering DVD only plans. Since then we have realized that there is still a very large continuing demand for DVDs both from our existing members as well as non-members. Given the long life we think DVDs by mail will have, treating DVDs as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs.
The new pricing will take effect immediately for new users, but existing subscribers will have until September to make up their minds. Netflix apps are available for the Apple TV 2, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and select Android devices.
