In today’s “awesome” announcement, Facebook has released a Skype-powered video chat service built into the native chat system. Unlike Google+’s “Hangouts”, it does not allow for group calls, but bringing video chat to 750 million users is an impressive feat nonetheless.
Facebook has also announced a new group chat feature, which works similarly to the “Facebook Groups” chat system (or, AIM, circa 1999). The feature will allow users to add multiple friends to the chat, and view chat history in the revamped Messages window. The new chat sidebar now shows frequently contacted friends at the top, so it’s much faster to find the person you’re looking for.
We’re also launching multi-person chat, which is one of our most requested features. Now when your friends can’t figure out what movie to see, you can just add them to a chat and decide together. To include more friends in your conversation, simply select Add Friends to Chat.
