Samsung has dropped the patent-infringement lawsuit against Apple, which claimed that Cupertino copied Samsung’s intellectual property in the iPhone and iPad. The case was originally filed in response to Apple’s claim that the Galaxy line of devices infringed on their own IP. Samsung’s official stament regarding the dropped case is that they wish to “streamline the legal proceedings”.
Samsung is a major supplier for iPhone hardware, but despite their friendship off the courts, Apple and Samsung will continue to battle it out in other countries. In effort to further protect their intellectual property, Samsung recently asked the ITC to block Apple device sales due to patent infringement. Handset manufacturers have been in an ongoing patent war for years, and each new case drags it out even further. It’s a shame, the millions of dollars in legal fees could be better spent on R&D.
