Incase to offer headphones

Incase, a popular maker of mobile device cases and bags, is branching off – into audio.  Starting in September, they will produce a range of stylish headphones and earbuds under the brand name of “Incase Soundesign“.

“A complementary extension of our product offering, the new headphones will reflect our expertise in designing and developing products that provide enhanced mobility and user experience.”

Soundesign will be their first foray into the audio market. Their initial offering will consist of 4 unique headphones “custom designed to match the natural shape of your ears and head for better sound isolation”. They’ve even added a few extras: every pair comes standard with microphone, volume, and remote controls on the cord. Here are the technical specs (same order as the image to the right):

  • Sonic Over Ear – titanium high-performance 40mm drivers with full 20 Hz – 20 KHz frequency response
  • Reflex On Ear – 40mm drivers with full 20 Hz – 20 KHz frequency response.
  • Pivot On Ear – 40 mm drivers with full 20 Hz – 20 KHz frequency response.
  • Capsule In Ear – Noise isolating in-ear headphones containing 8.5mm drivers with full 20 Hz – 20 KHz frequency response.

Beyond the technical is an impressive minimalist and intelligent form factor complete with Incases’s signature soft-touch matte finish. The person in charge of that form factor is Incase’s VP of Design, Markus Diebel. Markus brings with him a history of cutting-edge design and innovative thinking. Currently a teacher at CCA and Design Director at IDEO, he was once a founding member of designRAW. (designRAW turned heads as far back as 1999, and as far away as Milan, for their provocative and unique art). Says Mr. Diebel, about this product line:

“We are focused on delivering headphones that bring together design simplicity and intuitive functionality with precision sound and maximum performance [to] balance form and function in the new audio collection. We want users to enjoy an audio experience … that sound and feel as great as they look.”

At the time of this article no pricing has been announced, but Incase Soundesign headphones will be available starting in September.
