Unknown Buyer Acquiring PopCap Games for Over $1 Billion

PopCap, the incredible indie studio behind Plants vs. Zombies and the magnificent Peggle, is reportedly being sold to an unknown buyer for over $1 billion. TechCrunch believes that it could be Zynga, though they note that the social media game developer’s pockets may be too shallow. Another possibility is Electronic Arts, who is just large enough to gobble up PopCap. EA has a history of acquiring smaller studios, most recently Firemint, so they would be a good candidate. Japanese gaming corporation, DeNA, lies behind door number three. DeNA acquired Ngmoco last year for $400 million, and like any good behemoth, aims to grow by eating smaller organisms.

PopCap is one of the most loved studios on both PCs and mobile devices, so hopefully they will retain their core team in the event of an acquisition. We’re still looking forward to a Plants vs. Zombies sequel!
