Just under a year after its release, the iPhone 4 has skyrocketed to the top of the “Most Popular Cameras” chart on Flickr.com. Camera phones have come a long way over the past few years, but their domination in the amateur market probably came as a surprise to most dedicated camera manufacturers. The iPhone’s image sensor has come a long way since the original iPhone, and is now capable of taking stunning pictures. The need for PDAs and handheld organizers has diminished completely because of smartphones, and it looks like point-and-shoots are next. Of course, high-end cameras have professional level features that may be tough for pocket sized devices to replicate anytime soon, but technology does advance ridiculously fast.
It would be interesting to see how cameras from other mobile OSs stack up, but the distributed nature of Android and the like make it tough to get a good look at the combined numbers. The top 5 cameraphones on Flickr are the iPhone 4, 3G, 3GS, HTC Evo 4G, and iPod Touch (which somehow managed to get promoted from a lowly MP3 player). We’re sure the iPhone 5 will join its mates in due time.
