PowerSkin is a new company that has not had its turn in the spotlight compared to larger companies such as Otterbox. They offer sleek, smooth, and durable cases with unique features, the most notable being a case with an integrated battery built into it. The PowerSkin for the HTC Evo 4G has a unique design, lots of features, provides good protection, and is well worth the money spent. Now, let’s get a little more in-depth.

Even in the first ten seconds, many design aspects of the case are obvious. For example, one aspect is the material choice; the PowerSkin case is composed of silicone which is both smooth and easy to hold. The case does make the phone more bulky, but being able to handle it should be easy for most users. The amount of bulk isn’t big enough to make the phone useless. As you can see in the picture to the right, it is equivalent to two Evo’s in bulkiness.
Since the silicone causes friction, it is a little harder for it to go in and out of your pocket. This added with its bulk, may get a little annoying at times when you sit the PowerSkin’ned device in your pocket and it doesn’t fall to the bottom. The product is basically designed to protect your phone while potentially doubling the battery life. The case is made out of silicone except for the extra battery. On both sides of the case, you will notice a hard plastic area; this is the actual battery. The case was designed for style and efficiency with its sleek black color and an octopus logo on the back. Along with that, there are also octopus tentacles on the inside of the case. PowerSkin has designed a sleek, smooth, and very attractive case to not only protect your phone to the fullest but also charge it to the fullest. The case is designed to serve a dual purpose, to protect and charge your phone simultaneously.
This case has three main features:
1. Built-in Battery
This is perhaps the best feature of the case. It packs a 1500 mAh battery that can possibly double your battery life. Realistically, with moderate to heavy use, I have gotten about one-and-a-half days out of it. However, the light to moderate user may experience more results. My normal battery life is about a whole day without charge. So I am getting about half a day to two days more with this case.
2. LED Charging Lights
There are a set of four blue LED lights under the PowerSkin logo on the back of the case. These let the user know about what percentage the case is at. One light means the case is at about 25% capacity, two lights about 50%, three lights about 75%, and four lights it is fully charged. To see about what percentage the case is at, simply press the button underneath these lights and it will flash.
The bottom of the case where the LED lights are. As you can see, the case is 100% charged.
The case fits snugly around the HTC Evo 4G, leaving little if any room to slide around. Since the case is tight on it (a good thing) dropping it should not cause it to fall out. The possible issue I see with the case’s durability is the fact that one could damage the battery if the fall was too harsh and directly hit it.
3. “Smart” Charging
If you have your phone in your case and the case plugged into an exterior charger, the phone will take priority in charging. This means that the phone will fully charge before the case does. Once the phone is fully charged, the case will start to charge. This is the only mode to charge the phone and case.
The only addition I would make to this case’s features would be to add an “off” mode to the case. Perhaps where the user could long hold the “LED” button to turn the case off. This is because if your phone is fully charged while in the case, the case will always recharge it to 100%. Keeping you at a full 100% the whole day.
Considering the fact you have another battery attached to your phone, its protection value is actually pretty good. Since the case is made of silicone, it will hardly let any impact go directly to the phone. It also has a “bouncing” aspect when dropped, so it will not drop and stay where initially dropped. On the side with the screen, the case is raised slightly so that if it is dropped on the screen, the screen will not come into contact with the ground. Thus reducing the possibility of a screen crack. As for protecting the back, it would pretty much be impossible to scratch the back. With a big battery on the back, no drop should ever effect the back of the phone. This case does a good job of protecting your phone from chips, cracks, and scratches.
Protection Value: ★★★★½
Value For Money
The price I found to be the lowest for this case came to be $59.99†, without shipping. This is a great value for one’s money. Most extended batteries cost anywhere from $50.00 to $100.00. This price, added with a decent $50.00 case, can be very expensive. PowerSkin has found an excellent way to incorporate the both to bring the the best bang for your buck! For those who just want protection, this is probably not the case for you. There are cases which may offer better protection for your Evo. So if you strictly want protection, there are probably other alternatives.
Value for Money: ★★★★
This case is awesome! Also, it is probably one of the best deals you can find. They made this case so users can have a unique style, with good functionality, for a fair price. I definitely recommend this case to any smartphone user.
