It’s looking as if the iPhone 3GS will not be receiving the next major update to iOS, if Eldar Murtazin (a man with quite the history of phone-related leaks) is to be believed. In a beautifully concise tweet, he states:
Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3Gs wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will.
This is, of course, far from an official statement by Apple, but it does make you wonder: why would the iPhone 3GS, a device with similar (if not quite as good) hardware specs to the iPhone 4, not be able to run iOS 5? Perhaps some major change? Or is it just Apple wanting to drive their customers to the latest and greatest? They may offer an early upgrade option for 3GS owners to the new iPhone 5, when that ships, which would be a nice consolation prize.
We expect iOS 5 to be announced and unveiled at WWDC, but not shipped until later.
