Twitter Acquires TweetDeck for $40 Million

Twitter has bought out yet another client application: TweetDeck. Just over a year ago, Twitter purchased Tweetie from Atebits, and revamped (and rebranded) both the desktop and mobile applications. TweetDeck is one of the leading Twitter clients, and it would be a shame to see it killed off, but it is possible that the developers at Twitter are simply expanding their monetization options.

Earlier this year, Twitter not-so-subtly revealed their plans to shut-out 3rd party clients, a move which angered developers.

“More specifically, developers ask us if they should build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience. The answer is no.”

Buying up many of the popular clients could be the quickest (and safest) way to corral the community under their proprietary wing, but expect a #dickbar relapse if Twitter attempts any more funny business.
