Google has begun to block rooted Android devices from renting movies from the Android Market. At the moment, only the Motorola XOOM can access said Market movie rentals, but other devices are expected to be supported soon. As far as OS modification goes, Android is a relative haven for geeks—but preventing Android devices from accessing Google content is a bold move against the hacking community. Though, considering that Android is open-source and all, it’s possible that Google was pressured by studios to crack down on pirating.
Affected users will receive the error “Failed to fetch license for [movie title] (error 49)” when attempting to rent titles. A work-around will likely be available soon, but in the meantime, moviegoers can install the freshly released Netflix app for Android (which is exclusive to certain devices).
