“iCade” Turns Your iPad into an Arcade Machine

The folks at ThinkGeek have partnered with ION to bring the iCade, once an April Fool’s Day joke, to life! The iCade turns your iPad or iPad 2 into a retro-styled tabletop arcade cabinet via Bluetooth. The cabinet features an old style joystick, six numbered buttons and two enter buttons. ThinkGeek has also partnered with Atari, the first name in classic arcade games, to bring a huge suite of classic arcade titles including Asteroids┬« to the App Store with iCade support built right in. You’ll be able to play Pong for free, or purchase all 100 compatible games for $14.99. When the cabinet is released, a friendly API will be made available to developers to add iCade support to almost any game. Here’s a complete rundown of how to get your own iCade:

  • Pre-orders are now being taken on ThinkGeek’s website
  • Pre-orders will be restricted to within the United States until it is in-stock
  • Begins shipping sometime around May 20th, 2011
  • The ThinkGeek model will feature exclusive April Fools graphics
  • Retails for $99.99
