Ad-Supported Kindle Debuts, $25 Cheaper than Base Model

Well, now we’ve gotten advertisements creeping from magazines and newspapers, to Google searches, to private websites, and now… to your e-reader., the behemoth online sales company, today announced their ad-supported Kindle. Why ads? It helps reduce the price, and allows Amazon to deliver “Special Offers” to you. Examples of these offers include:

  • $20 Amazon gift card for $10
  • 6 Audible audiobooks for $6
  • 1 album from Amazon MP3 Store for $1

Other advertising partners have also been announced, and include big names such as Buick, Olay and Visa.

These advertisements will appear on screensavers, and its home pages. Amazon assures us via a press release (read it after the break) that the reading experience will remain intact and unaffected by ads. This move sets the price of the ad-supported Kindle device at $114, or a $25 savings over the previous WiFi-only base model.

This marks the first device designed for the masses that will incorporate ads in such a way as to provide a notable subsidy on the initial cost.

Amazon is also introducing “AdMash” – the free Kindle app and website where customers choose the most attractive and engaging display advertisements that will become Kindle sponsored screensavers. Kindle’s sponsored screensavers are specially-designed display advertisements that take advantage of Kindle’s high-contrast, no-glare electronic-ink display. Before these advertisements can be presented to Kindle customers, they are first previewed by customers using AdMash.
